The pilot project uses removable solar panels fitted between the rails, allowing regular maintenance to continue. Developers say the technology could unlock new clean-energy capacity by making use of existing railway infrastructure.

The pilot installation covers 100 metres of track and consists of 48 solar panels expected to generate around 16,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity annually.
The removable system is designed to be installed and removed mechanically for track maintenance. If expanded, developers believe the technology could be adopted on railway networks in other countries.
