Since 1978, the city has focused on re-greening former mining land through large-scale tree planting. The project reached its 10-millionth tree last July, planted with the support of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the late primatologist Jane Goodall.

The re-greening effort has helped give Greater Sudbury some of the cleanest air in Ontario and is seen as a model for other cities. Around 13,000 volunteers have helped restore about 3,400 hectares of previously barren land.
