New satellite data is improving the tracking of methane, the second-largest contributor of climate change after carbon dioxide, by pinpointing emissions hotspots previously hidden from view.

Using figures from a 14-satellite constellation operated by Canadian space firm GHGSat, researchers working with Carbon Mapper and Dutch space scientists identified 3,114 oil, gas and coal sites emitting methane.
The team estimated releases of up to 8.54 million tonnes in 2023, giving policymakers precise targets for mitigation and faster emissions reductions.
