This official said that Sporting did not renew the operating agreement with the exhibitor NOS and referred further explanations to the sports club.
"These were cinemas we would have liked to have, but that was the decision," said Nuno Aguiar.
Currently called Cinemas NOS Alvaláxia, this complex had 16 screens at the time of its inauguration in 2003, in a commercial area in the then-new José Alvalade stadium, home of Sporting, in Lisbon.
At the time, this cinema – called Cinemas Millenium Lisboa – was operated by producer Paulo Branco, and one of the 16 screens had a unique digital projection system. The presence of French actress Catherine Deneuve was announced for the opening.
In August 2025, Sporting announced the completion of the purchase of the Alvaláxia commercial space (where the cinema complex is integrated), in a transaction valued at €17 million, as part of the “Cidade Sporting” project, which should include the creation of a club museum.
“The acquisition of Alvaláxia constitutes a milestone of great relevance in the path defined by the club to establish itself as a hub of entertainment excellence on a global scale,” the sports club said in a statement last summer.
According to the most recent data collected by the Portuguese Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual (ICA), in 2025, this NOS Alvaláxia cinema complex welcomed 121,783 spectators, down from 193,992 spectators counted in 2024.
In 2019, before the Covid-19 pandemic, the cinema recorded 275,776 entries.
