According to the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS), the fire that broke out at 3:04 am on 2 July in Vouzela and then spread to Oliveira de Frades and Tondela (Viseu) and Águeda (Aveiro) had, on 3 July, a burned area of 7,191 hectares, and is expanding, as the fire has been burning for more than 33 hours and remains active.
The more than 7,000 hectares correspond to approximately 10,000 grass football fields.
Data consulted by the Lusa news agency at 12:00 pm, based on information collected by the VIIRS and Modis sensors (installed aboard satellites orbiting the Earth), also allow for the estimation of a fire perimeter of more than 50 kilometres (km), which developed westward and southwestward (towards the municipality of Águeda, through the Préstimo forest area) and also southward and southeastward, towards the slopes of the Serra do Caramulo mountain range, already in the municipality of Tondela.
