Silves Castle is one of the most important historical landmarks in the
Algarve. Located on a hill above the town of Silves, it offers wide views
over the surrounding countryside, the Arade River, and the old town with its
red rooftops. Walking along the walls and towers, you can see how large and
well-preserved the fortress still is.
The castle dates back mainly to the Moorish period, when Silves was an
important city in southern Portugal. Inside the walls, you can walk through
open courtyards, see the remains of old buildings, and explore different
sections of the fortress. There is also a small archaeological museum
displaying objects found during excavations, such as ceramics and tools that
show what daily life was like here centuries ago.
One of the most interesting parts of the castle is the large underground
cistern that stored water during sieges. Today, visitors can walk along the
ramparts, explore the grounds, and enjoy the views from different points
around the castle.
Silves Castle is not only a historic monument but also a great place to
learn about the Algarve's history while enjoying one of the best viewpoints
in the area.
