Data published by Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications shows cards rose above cash in the 2025 household payment breakdown, a milestone in the nation’s long-standing cash culture.
Analysts say online shopping expansion and rewards programs have boosted card use, even as overall cashless adoption in Japan remains lower than in some other economies.
