"Since the beginning of monitoring in 2022, the basket, composed of 63 products, has increased by €59.19, which represents an increase of 31.53%," says the consumer protection organisation, in a statement sent to newsrooms.

According to DECO PROteste, "in the last week alone, the price of fish fingers increased by 30%, and sliced ​​cured cheese, cooking oil, and Frankfurt sausages rose by 12%."

The consumer protection organization reminds consumers that "since February 2022, and with the escalation of inflation, DECO PROteste has taken the initiative to conduct a weekly analysis of the prices of a basket composed of 63 Essential Food Products."

"This week, the basket, which includes Meats, Frozen Foods, Fruits and Vegetables, Dairy Products, Groceries and Fish, considering, among others, products such as Turkey, Chicken, Mackerel, Hake, Onion, Potato, Carrot, Banana, Apple, Orange, Rice, Spaghetti, Sugar, Ham, Milk, Cheese, Butter, reached its highest price since monitoring began: €246.89," it says.

Comparing with the beginning of this year, that is, between January 1, 2025 and December 17, 2025, "there is a difference of €10.72 when comparing the same basket on the 2 days (4.54%)".

Christmas cooking

One week before Christmas, cooking oil, semi-skimmed milk and turkey thighs have become more expensive, despite the price of the Christmas basket having fallen last week, according to data released by DECO PROteste.

"A small basic basket with 16 essential products on the Portuguese Christmas table, such as cod, turkey, cabbage, wine or olive oil, can cost €53.45 this year," says the consumer protection organisation in a statement.

According to DECO PROteste, "this is €1.08 less (1.98% less) than that recorded a week ago and 9 cents (0.17%) more than the value a year ago, when the same basket cost €53.36."

"Even so, on December 21, 2022, the year in which DECO PROteste began this monitoring, to buy exactly the same products, consumers spent €7.08 less (15.27 percent less)," reads the note released.

Furthermore, "a week before Christmas Eve, five of the 16 products in this basket registered price increases, such as cooking oil, semi-skimmed milk, and turkey thighs."
