The National Republican Guard (GNR) is conducting an intensive inspection operation on driving under the influence of alcohol and narcotic or psychotropic substances throughout mainland Portugal between December 15 and 21. The action is part of the annual RoadPol plan and aims to promote safer driving behaviours and reduce serious road accidents.
In a statement, the GNR explains that the operation is part of the initiatives of the European Road Police Network (RoadPol), an organisation created by European traffic police forces with the goal of improving road safety and law enforcement. These actions, of European scope, aim to create a safer road environment through simultaneous intervention on the main causes of accidents, seeking to positively influence road users and encourage the adoption of more responsible behaviours.
The GNR (National Republican Guard) emphasises that driving under the influence of alcohol or psychotropic substances continues to be a significant risk factor and is receiving increasing attention in road safety policies at the European level.
In its report, the security force states that, up to November 30, 2025, 1,705,756 drivers were inspected, resulting in 12,506 arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol and 76 arrests for driving under the influence of psychotropic substances, narcotics, or similar products.

This should be ongoing all year long, not just for holidays. Drunk driving causes so many injuries and deaths, it is too big of a problem for people to ignore. In fact, I question the morality of those who go out and drink more than 1 drink, and then get in their cars to drive. People who think they are not impaired are deluding themselves. The problem is our judgement on our extent of impairment is severely distorted after just 2 drinks. Alcohol is the number one drug problem in the world, causing more deaths than any other substance abuse, even after adjusting the calculations to account for how many users per capita there are. I say treat those caught driving while drunk to be forced to rehabilitation programs, and community service. Jail, or just fines, won’t solve any problems.
