According to the European Statistical Office, in 2024, 850 million trips in the EU were domestic (71% of the total) and 250 million (21%) to another member state, implying that 92% of trips made by EU residents were within the bloc.
Among EU countries, the highest proportions of domestic trips in total trips were recorded in Romania (90%), Spain (88%), and France, Portugal, and Greece (each with 85%).
The lowest percentage was observed in Luxembourg, at just 5%, followed by Belgium (23%) and Malta (35%).
On the other hand, these three EU countries recorded the highest proportions of international travel within the EU – Luxembourg (78%), Belgium (62%), and Malta (48%) – while Romania (9%), France (9%), and Spain (8%) had the lowest percentages.
