"Broccoli is now the product in the DECO PROteste food basket whose price has increased the most compared to January 1st of this year. A kilo of broccoli can now cost 3.87 euros, 1.08 euros more (39%) than in the first week of the year. Last week, between September 24th and October 1st, the price of this vegetable increased by 12 cents per kilo (3 percent more)," reads the statement released by the consumer protection organization.
However, it's not all bad news, as "the price of the food basket monitored by DECO PROteste, on the other hand, registered a slight decrease of 48 cents (0.20%) last week, and now costs 241.97 euros."
"Even so, it is more expensive than in the first week of 2025 and records one of the highest prices since DECO PROteste began tracking the price of this basket of essential goods in 2022. At the beginning of January of this year, it cost 5.81 euros less (2.46 percent less). Almost four years ago, on January 5, 2022, it was possible to buy the same products for 54.27 euros less (28.91 percent less)," the statement read.
Which products increased the most?
In the last week, between September 24th and October 1st, the products whose prices increased the most were red potatoes (up 11%), hake medallions (up 8%), and cereal flakes (up 8%).
If we compare this week's prices with those of the first week of the year, January 1, 2025, besides broccoli, the largest percentage price increases were seen in products such as ground roasted coffee (up 29%), oranges (up 28%), and eggs (up 28%).
