This is "a pioneering measure that reinforces the municipality's commitment to animal protection and social support for the neediest families" and is aimed at "families or individuals in socioeconomically vulnerable situations residing in the municipality of Faro who own dogs or cats," the municipality stated.

The support provided includes the provision of food, electronic identification with a microchip, registration with the Pet Information System (SIAC), and internal deworming, the Algarve City Council said.

"With this initiative, the city aims to reduce the number of abandoned animals, financially support families in need, and ensure better living conditions for animals," the municipality explained.
