"Given the combination of big waves and a higher than normal high tide, the sea reached places it normally doesn't reach," explained Faro's harbormaster, Captain Vítor Dias.

The harbourmaster clarified that sea conditions are being influenced by a hurricane passing through the North Atlantic, which will have a greater impact on the west coast of Portugal.

"People are warned to be cautious, especially during high tides," the harbourmaster warned.

The same source said that the Faro City Council is "making efforts to remove and subsequently replace" the walkway, which was damaged and left scattered across the sand.

A source from Faro City Council also told Lusa that the structure's destruction was caused by rising tides and waves. The municipality is currently carrying out cleanup efforts and providing support to concessionaires.
