According to the Judicial Police (PJ), the 27-year-old man is suspected of aggravated robbery, possession of a prohibited weapon, aggravated assault on physical integrity, and attempted extortion.

Police stated that the crimes attributed to the suspect occurred on public roads and at a nightlife establishment in the Algarve city between the end of 2024 and May this year.

The arrest was made by members of the Portimão Criminal Investigation Department, with the collaboration of the Lisbon Police Intervention Corps, who were able to locate the suspect, despite his "extreme mobility" and lack of permanent residence or place of work, according to the Judiciary Police.

"The suspect, in co-authorship, approached the victims and, under threat of firearms, robbed them of their money and other property, then fled. So far, seven victims have been identified," the Judiciary Police stated.

The police force emphasised that the suspect, in one of the crimes, "shot one of the victims in the knee, causing serious injuries."

The consequences of the shooting were only "not more serious" for the victim "due to the low caliber of the ammunition fired," the Judiciary Police stated. They also charged the detainee with "extortion for money," which was not consummated because the victim "did not have the required amount," but which caused minor injuries with a sharp weapon.

"The investigation continues not only to gather additional evidence, but also to identify and arrest other individuals involved and determine whether there are any potential victims who, out of fear, may not have filed a complaint," the PJ added.
