These four Portuguese cities were among 48 European cities included in CDP’s prestigious A List 2024, which highlights 112 cities worldwide for outstanding performance in environmental leadership and data transparency. European cities made up for the largest share, accounting for 43% of the total list, with entries from 11 countries, including Portugal, France, Italy, Spain, Denmark, Germany, and the United Kingdom.

Matosinhos was one of five cities added to the list for the first time in 2024, joining new European entries such as Fredensborg (Denmark), Rotterdam (Netherlands), Glasgow, and South Gloucestershire (UK). The 48 selected cities represent a wide spectrum of urban centres – from municipalities to major capitals – including Paris, Florence, Heidelberg, Malmö, and Glasgow.

CDP is a global nonprofit that manages environmental disclosure for companies, cities, states, and regions. The organisation emphasises the role of transparent data in driving environmental progress and supports decision-making based on scientific and measurable information.

Hanah Paik, CDP’s Global Director for Cities, States, and Regions, stated that the cities on the 2024 A List are “setting the global standard for environmental leadership.” CDP’s work champions the use of data to power climate action by fostering collaboration among business, finance, science, and policy leaders.

The recognition of these Portuguese cities highlights their commitment to sustainable urban development, climate resilience, and transparency, setting an example for others on a global scale.
