This figure marks a historical record, reflecting five consecutive years of increase (38.2% since 2020), highlighting the country as increasingly active in the European innovation landscape.
According to Expresso, Portuguese innovation is led by universities and the health sector. The University of Porto, for example, stands out among the largest applicants, with a special focus on medical, pharmaceutical and digital technologies. The newspaper also highlights the female presence: 48% of patent applications include at least one female inventor, placing Portugal second in the rate of female inventors in Europe, almost double the average of the OEP (Portuguese Employee Association).
The weekly publication reinforces that the patenting process is complex, requiring technical and administrative support, and that the impetus comes from professors and students motivated by entrepreneurship and research. The University of Porto exemplifies this ecosystem, with projects encompassing health, water, clean energy, and digital technology, showing that the country can transform talent into innovative solutions with European and global impact.
