“We are aware that at least two types of fake messages are circulating, both referencing payments due for emergency services: one with a bank reference and the other with links to fraudulent websites,” warn the Shared Services of the Ministry of Health (SPMS).
According to SPMS, this is “a fraudulent scheme that improperly refers to credible entities, such as the Ministry of Health, the SNS, and SNS 24, with the intention of inducing recipients to provide personal and banking information, with the aim of obtaining financial gain.”
The Ministry of Health is urging citizens to be wary of fake websites and SMS messages impersonating the SNS 24 helpline and requesting undue payments.
It reminds citizens that the official SNS 24 website address is sns24.gov.pt and emphasises that the telephone line and the SNS 24 website are free public services.
With the exception of emergency services without referral and some nursing consultations, all SNS (Portuguese public healthcare system) services are free.
“Never click on or access suspicious links. Do not make any payments and do not enter any personal or banking information. If in doubt, contact SNS 24 – 808 24 24 24 (administrative matters),” advises SPMS (Shared Services of the Ministry of Health), adding that investigations are underway with the competent authorities.
