The special art of Portuguese mosaics is defined by the decorated pavements and sidewalks that have been stepped on by thousands every single day, even though they are rich in history.

The Calçada Portuguesa is thought to have been established by 1842, when the artisans, called “Calceteiros”, started to create this special pavement. Besides all the beauty, they have an infrastructural purpose, by letting the water run through their cracks, which can be beneficial during rainy days. Besides not accumulating water, the rain may make it feel slippery, requiring extra care when walking on it when the weather is not being friendly.

The method of crafting these streets is the same as it was a century ago. It takes a lot of time and effort to make the perfect designs, which can also be seen across the Atlantic, in Brazil.
