The announcement was made by Pedro Marcelino, chairman of the board of directors of BTT Investimento, the private company responsible for the project, during the presentation of the "2025-2026 Development Plan," which took place in Beja.
According to Marcelino, the private healthcare complex will include a hospital unit, a surgical centre with two operating rooms, 30 medical-surgical beds, 48 consulting rooms and examination rooms, and 19 physiotherapy suites.
At the same time, the new hospital will have a mental health area, a long-term care unit, and a palliative care unit with 80 beds.
"The mental health and continuing care area will operate on half of the second floor and the third," the official told Lusa news agency.
The complex will be located next to the Conceição Neighborhood Sports Complex.
The new private hospital, the first to operate in the district, is expected to begin operations "by the end of 2026," and the medium- and long-term continuing care areas are expected to begin operating "in mid-June" of that year.
"We estimate that the continuing care and palliative care area will begin before the hospital area, [since the latter] has a series of specific needs that require a different level of intervention," he emphasized.
Pedro Marcelino also stated that, due to the need to install heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems and "a series of synergies with artificial intelligence," the hospital construction project should "take some time."
“Complement”
The investment, which also includes the construction of a new hospital in Coimbra and the expansion of the existing unit in Leiria, is approximately 74 million euros and is expected to "complement the public healthcare system."
"More than an investment in healthcare, what we are implementing is an investment in Beja and its interior, in its future, its potential, and its centrality. Beja deserves to be heard, seen, and chosen; it deserves to gain skills and services, not only for those who already live here or move here, but also to be a destination for families, professionals, and businesses," he added.
According to Pedro Marcelino, the new hospital will allow for the direct placement of approximately 100 professionals, including doctors, nurses, assistants, and technicians.
"The hospital will seek to establish agreements with the state, health insurance providers, and subsystems," he added.
