Unlike many other towns in the Algarve, there are no big resorts around here. Once an important fishing village, Burgau now lives mostly from tourism. The two former fishing companies have closed, and their facilities have been replaced with a lifeguard station and a small docking area for boats. Today, you can find several holiday houses, restaurants and hotels nearby. However, the fishing roots of the village remain visible. On the east side of the beach, you can see colourful fishing boats.
For those seeking some adventure, there are plenty of opportunities for water sports such as surfing, kayaking and stand-up paddling. On the western side of Praia do Burgau, there is another small, secluded beach, accessible only by boat.
Finding a parking spot near the beach, especially in the summer, can be tricky. The village is small so anywhere you park, getting to the beach shouldn’t take too long. To reach it, you will need to walk down the hill.
Praia do Burgau is a medium-sized beach. The best time to come is in the morning, as when the tide rises, the sand part reduces significantly. Right on the beach is a well-known fish and seafood restaurant, Beach Bar Burgau. A popular spot, where you can enjoy a morning coffee, a lovely lunch or an afternoon cocktail. The bar is open every day except Mondays.
If you walk up the hill that goes along the beach, you will be rewarded with a beautiful panoramic view. Several walking paths start here, including one leading to the nearby village of Salema. Be aware that this walk takes a few hours, round-trip. It’s advised to use hiking boots because of some steep sections. The difficulty of this path is considered moderate and offers beautiful views along the way.
Almádena Fort is a fortification that stands imposingly on the cliffs between the villages of Burgau and Salema. Damaged by the 1755 earthquake and later abandoned, after losing its military function. This Fort used to protect the area’s tuna fishery from the attacks of privateers and pirates. Strategically located on the high cliffs on the top of the Atlantic Ocean, the Almádena Fort offers a breathtaking view that stretches to the horizon. The panoramic view of the coast and the sea provides an enriching experience, giving a glimpse into the past, where the Fort played a crucial role in defending against maritime invasions.
Burgau is located just 20 minutes from Sagres, which gives a good opportunity to explore Costa Vicentina, a protected area known for its pristine beaches and nature reserves.
