Data published by Eurostat on the 2024 harvests reveal that Portugal was the third-largest tomato producer (1.7 million tons), behind Italy (six million tons) and Spain (4.5 million tons).

In total, last year, the EU harvested 62.2 million tons of fresh vegetables (including melons), representing a 6% increase compared to the 58.8 million tons harvested in 2023.

According to the statistical office, Spain (14.8 million tons), Italy (13.9 million tons), and France (5.8 million tons) were the main producers of fresh vegetables in the EU, together accounting for 55% of the total harvest.

By vegetable type, EU harvested production increased last year compared to 2023: tomato production was 5% higher at 16.8 million tons, carrot production was 6% higher at 4.7 million tons, and onion production was 11% higher at 7.0 million tons.

Among EU countries, Italy was the largest tomato producer in 2024, accounting for 36% of the total EU tomato harvest, followed by Spain (27%) and Portugal (10%).

Meanwhile, EU production of fruits, berries, and nuts (excluding citrus fruits, grapes, and strawberries) was 24.3 million tons in 2024.
