Modern architecture is easy to slip through the cracks. Now, I do have my own troubles with some modern architecture. However, there are truly some great examples that have uplifted the general aesthetic of Lisbon.
For example, the cruise port. Minimalistically designed to also not take away from the old beauty of Lisbon, it certainly still holds its own. Designed by the same architect who also created the Pavilion of Knowledge for the Expo of 1998, João Luís Carrilho da Graça.
The whole Expo area delivers great examples. Yet, with the popularity of Portugal and Lisbon rising globally, more and more world-class architects leave their imprint on the Portuguese landscape.
And many great offices are also starting to leave their mark globally. From old legends like Álvaro Siza Vieira, Eduardo Souto de Moura, and Carrilho da Graça to the modern era of Aires Mateus, OODA, and Ricardo Bak Gordon.
