A source from ANEPC told the Lusa news agency that the readiness level has been raised to 3, which means greater response capacity for operational personnel.
The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) forecasts persistent and sometimes heavy rain, with some severity in those regions, for Friday, October 31, and Saturday, November 1.
Due to the heavy rain, IPMA has already issued an orange warning for the northern and central regions between 3 am on Friday and 6 am on Saturday, and a yellow warning only for the districts of Lisbon, Santarém, and Castelo Branco between 3 am on Friday and 6 am on Saturday.
Civil Protection, in turn, warned that significant variations in flows may occur in historically more vulnerable areas.
In the North
In the Minho River basin, flows may increase, but without critical situations. In the Coura River, monitoring of the situation is recommended.
The Lima, Cávado, and Douro rivers are also expected to rise, "without critical situations" reported.
Regarding the information provided by the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA), intensified monitoring is recommended in the Vouga basin, where the waters of the Águeda River may register an increase "greater than normal".
In Central
Monitoring of the Mondego River water level is also recommended, as inflows to Coimbra may increase.
The recommendation extends to the Lis River and the Tagus basin, due to the forecast of increased flows in the Zêzere River. In the Nabão River, there may also be an increase in water level, which should be monitored.
In the Ribeiras do Oeste basin, increased flows may occur in the Arnoia and Alcoa rivers.
Flooding Alert
The worsening weather conditions are associated with the forecast of flooding in urban areas and contamination of drinking water sources by debris resulting from rural fires.
Civil Protection has warned of the need to ensure the unobstructed flow of rainwater drainage systems and the proper securing of loose structures, especially scaffolding, signs, and other suspended materials.
