In a warning to the public, the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC) reports that the weather forecast for the coming days indicates "sometimes heavy rainfall," accompanied by thunderstorms, and "increased wind intensity along the coast and in the highlands, with conditions favourable to the occurrence of extreme wind events, especially in the South."
Given these forecasts, Civil Protection warns of flooding in urban areas, caused by the accumulation of rainwater due to obstructions in drainage systems or coastal overtopping, as well as flooding due to the overflowing of some waterways, rivers, and streams.
ANEPC also warns of unstable slopes, leading to landslides, collapses, and other incidents caused by water infiltration (a phenomenon that can be exacerbated by the removal of vegetation cover following rural summer fires), slippery road surfaces due to the possible formation of water tables, and the dragging of loose objects onto roads, or the detachment of mobile structures due to strong winds.
ANEPC urges the public to adopt preventive measures, such as ensuring the unblocking of rainwater drainage systems and the removal of inert materials and other objects that obstruct the free flow of water, the proper securing of loose structures, including scaffolding, billboards, and other suspended structures, and special care when walking and staying near wooded areas, being aware of the possibility of falling branches and trees.
Driving with caution
Drivers are urged to adopt defensive driving practices, reduce speed, and pay special attention to the potential formation of water tables on highways, and avoid crossing flooded areas to prevent people or vehicles from being swept into potholes or open drains.
Civil Protection also advises the public to exercise special caution when driving along coastal areas and riverside areas historically more vulnerable to coastal flooding, avoiding passing through and remaining in these areas, and refraining from engaging in activities related to the sea, including sport fishing, water sports, and beachside strolls. They should also avoid parking vehicles too close to the shoreline.
