The first promotional campaign will take place between September 30th and October 2nd in Madrid, with the participation of Citrus do Algarve IGP at the "Fruit Attraction" trade fair. Four other campaigns will be held in these four foreign markets, as well as three initiatives in the Algarve region, through the end of 2026, AlgarOrange announced in a statement.
"Spain, France, Germany, and Canada are the chosen destinations, not only because they are markets with growth potential for Algarve Citrus IGP, but also because they host the largest international trade fairs in the sector, bringing together thousands of potential customers from around the world," explained the Algarve citrus producers' association.
These initiatives aim to "increase the recognition, notoriety, and international visibility" of the IGP and "foster, in the perception of international consumers, its quality, differentiation, and added value," AlgarOrange also argued, emphasizing the region's role as Portugal's largest citrus producer.
"The slogan chosen to communicate this initiative is 'Get the taste. Feel the sun.' It invites consumers to taste oranges, tangerines, clementines, or lemons produced in the Algarve under excellent conditions," it added.
Among the conditions of "excellence" for IGP citrus production in the Algarve are the region's "soil and climate," where sun exposure allows the fruits to achieve a "right balance between sweetness and acidity" or a "high juice content".
"This is a project of scale and ambition that will put IGP Algarve Citrus on the international map. We are opening doors in strategic markets and strengthening the competitiveness of companies in the region," said José Oliveira, president of AlgarOrange, quoted in the statement.
The project is co-promoted by NERA – the Algarve Region Business Association, AlgarOrange, the Algarve Tourism Association, the Algarve Wine Commission, the Algarve Tourism Board, and the University of Algarve, it added.
Algarve IGP Citrus production is carried out by 15 regional operators in the municipalities of Albufeira, Castro Marim, Faro, Lagoa, Lagos, Loulé (except the parish of Ameixial), Monchique, Olhão, Portimão, São Brás de Alportel, Silves, Tavira (except the parish of Cachopo), and Vila Real de Santo António.
Algarve IGP Citrus production exceeded 64,000 tons in the 2023/2024 harvest, the association also stated, noting that this was the "highest figure in the last eight years."
It may have been lost to expatriates who consume continental breakfast but English Breakfast must de rigeur compose eggs and bacon ,tea and toast with sevile orange marmelade. It welcome news that the Algarve will be exporting its oranges which are very similar to Seville or Sevilha variety .All thanks to the much maligned "industanicos" or migrants in Portugal .After a long period of abandon by native Portuguese the citrus industry is in full blom .Hip hip hurray.

Algarve oranges are fantastic - best I've ever had. It would be great to see these in our grocery stores. I'm from Canada and lived in Portugal last winter.
It also has to be sustainable and doesn't exploit the land and people of Portugal.
