The Association for the Protection of Animals Algarve (APAA) and its President, Jenny Clarke, have many encounters with the public. Where Amigo was concerned, an abandoned young dog, turned up at a couple’s holiday home enjoyed being fed but not touched!
The couple were returning to their apartment in France. How would the dog survive? Scratching heads; finally the solution was to ask Gail Skinner, APAA’s dog-behaviourist and trainer buddy, to lend a hand. “Plan A was to move their van out of the garage and start feeding Amigo inside, taking the bowl further in and the door almost closed.”

Jenny and Gail arrived to find a petrified Amigo. But at least he was secured. One catchpole and a dog crate later they shipped him off to see dog-trainer Afonso at Happy Dog Center at Pêra. “Amigo will stay for a week’s assessment at special rates, then if he fits in with a lady and her four dogs, he can be fostered, at least until a proper forever home can be located.”
One thing they do know is that Amigo is now safe and happy and is on the road to having a proper future. Not abandoned in the countryside. Thanks to the couple who thought enough of him and his future to make contact with APAA in the first place. “Sometimes we wonder if we can get the impossible done! But with willing hands our ‘Here to Help’ motto carries us through some of the worst scenarios.” APAA can only thank not only the shelters and associations but the kind-hearted people of the community at large. A step in the right direction for Amigo. Good fortune furry friend!
