Doctors injected a clear gel (HPMC) into the eye of patients every three to four weeks for ten months. Previous treatments using steroids or silicone oil failed to restore vision and could be toxic over time. The gel is a low-cost material already used in eye surgery, now repurposed as repeated therapy.

Hypotony can result from trauma, inflammation, surgery, or medication. So far, thirty-five patients have been treated with funding from the Moorfields Eye Charity. Doctors caution that the results are promising but early, and say the treatment depends on patients still having viable vision cells at the back of the eye.
