Igreja Santa Marta, in Ericeira, is the place where Surfers go to ask for protection when out of the water. In the past, this church used to be a sisterhood, with the first version of the chapel being constructed around 1400. In 1760, a rebuild was made and the church gained the structure that is still maintained today. Having a rich baroque interior, the church keeps the zeitgeist of its era.
This church has a strong connection with fishermen, as it was their favourite place of worship. It is important for them, warriors of the rough seas that threaten their lives while working, fishermen had to find an anchor besides the one they use on the boat.
However, what people most remember about this church is the sisterhood, which organised different celebrations and processions. Nevertheless, when the parish started to grow, the sisterhood, eventually, started losing people and cannot be found in the church anymore.
Being very close to the ocean, this church is definitely a place worth visiting.
